STATE, BROOM

I made a woodcut of the state of Alaska for a poster contest. I'll post the complete once it's finished.

In other woodcutting news (news?), I've spent a couple of mornings of the past week in the rare books section of the USC library. They have some of the very first issues of BROOM MAGAZINE, a publication made by American ex-patriots in Italy in the early 1920s, in their catalogue.

Broom featured works by established artists and writers, but helped kick-start the careers of many young, unconventional bohemians from Europe and America. The more I think about it, the more privileged I feel to have complete access to such legendary media. The covers alone are incredible and went straight from the artists' hand to the front page!

  1. cool! I keep meaning to spend some time in the rare books room, but I'm still a little intimidated by it. Your woodcut looks great! I kinda like the way it looks hand pressed, but using the press will give you a more even coat (if that's what you're into). Sorry I'm so useless as a press instructor.. I just wait until my class is working with it so that I know that the press is at the right height.
